Even when working along on a project, it's a good idea to integrate frequently, instead of having long-lived branches. Merge early, merge often.

Otherwise you end like me, spending Sunday evenings cleaning up branches with hundreds of commits so you can merge something that is a clean story.
CI is not about automatically running builds and tests, after all. It's about integrating frequently. Which means merging frequently. And then, ideally, deploying frequently, though that seems to be more relevant for webby stuff.
