my paper "Making legacy Fortran code type safe through automated program transformation" has just been published in Journal of Supercomputing, as Open Access:

"We present the first rigorous analysis of the type safety of FORTRAN 77 and the novel program transformation and type checking algorithms required to convert FORTRAN 77 subroutines and functions into pure, side-effect free subroutines and functions in Fortran 90.
We show that the resulting code is type safe and that the pure, side-effect free and referentially transparent subroutines can readily be offloaded to accelerators."

I heard a theory recently that felt right to me: that Elon Musk's Boring Company isn't actually meant to produce usable mass transit. Instead, it's designed to outbid other public-transit proposals and then intentionally fail, so that trust in public transit proposals will be eroded and people will continue to buy and drive cars.

@rysiek It was the best of mines, it was the worst of mines, it was the age of foolishness, it was the age of profound idiocy, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of credulity, it was the season of GPU embargos, it was the season of coal-fired hash farms, it was the spring of hodl, it was the winter of sodl, we had stonks before us, we had nothing NFT (same thing) behind us, we were all going direct to Mt. GOX, we were all going direct pump'n'dump marketing—in short, the period was so far like the libertarian goldbug anti-fiat kill-the-fed wet dream asset inflation feeding frenzy.

I'm planning on upgrading this instance later this evening, if everything goes as planned. Expect some downtime this evening.

You know what: it'd be great if people who need accessibility didn't go around calling other people's work "trash". I get it: accessibility is hard, and required for people to use a computer—but you know how proprietary platforms deal with it? They pay developers. You know what Linux users do for it? They fucking whine about it, and then they go out and say that any effort made is trash.

Well, guess what: stuff doesn't fix itself.

Finally figured out why the new firefox version (89) was so horribly slow (multi-second lag). Apparently it is totally incompatible with having a DPI setting in X for scaling.

Now I just have to deal with everything else being tiny...

Oh, wow, the local hardware shop has the double door hooks actually labelled in the system as "drunk octopus" and it comes up on the receipt. The memes are breaking free! The singularity is upon us! etc.

My views on Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation

So I decided it was definitely time to remove the FSF sticker from my laptop. It was really hard to remove and it left a really gross residue that I'm not sure I'll ever get off. If that isn't a good metaphor for Stallman's influence on the world of free software, I don't know what is.

Every time I use (u)rxvt for very long I'm reminded that I'm extremely used to xterm's very specific selection behavior (especially for multiple clicks) and I can feel something is off even for small variations from it.
